Lateral Knee Pain
By Catharine Bainbridge - Myotherapist
In September this year I had a client consult Elite Myotherapy for her knee pain. She had been playing golf and twisted her patellofemoral joint and ever since had been experiencing lateral knee pain. The knee joint had also previously been x-rayed which showed degeneration leading into arthritis.
On assessment I looked at my clients’ posture, assessed any ligament or meniscus damage, checked the tracking of the patella and had a look at the strength of some of the important muscles that effect the knee joint such as vastus medialis oblique. Once clearing any structural damage I informed my client that I could not change any arthritis damage/degeneration, however we could definitely help to manage the knee pain with exercises, Myotherapy and postural education.
My client also consulted an orthopaedic surgeon to see if any surgical work could be done to the joint. The surgeon and I were in touch and developed a plan to treat my client with Myotherapy and corrective exercise to see if an arthroscope could be avoided and the pain managed with more conservative therapy.
I had 3.5 months to see if I could avoid surgery for my client. Along with myofascial dry needling and soft tissue massage from the hip joint to the lower limb my client was very diligent with her homework. The homework consisted of stretching, spikey ball massage, strengthening of core muscles such as gluteus medius, transverse abdominis and vastus medialis oblique. My client even bought a yoga mat so that she could continue her exercises whilst away on holiday.
On consultation with her surgeon just over 3 months later my clients’ knee pain had shown huge improvement. She was basically pain free unless she had “overdone it” i.e. walking for too long in poor shoes on concrete, although my client was now aware of what to do if the knee pain occurred. I was also in touch with the surgeon again to get their opinion on my client’s knee. They were also happy with the results concluding with the fact that they supported our client continuing with Myotherapy maintenance and the corrective exercises to keep the pain at bay.
I think this is a great example of how Myotherapy can help to manage pain even in conditions that we can not modify, as well as how beneficial it can be for the client when their treating practitioners from different fields work in concert with each other.
