Wearing incorrect footwear can cause long-lasting damage to your body
So if after reading this, you still can’t live without your favourite pair of heels, consider the following heel wearer tips:
Are you a fashion icon who wouldn’t dream of stepping out of the house without your stilettos on? Are you wearing these shoes in pain and adopting a ‘grin and bear it’ attitude, choosing fashion over comfort?
Let’s face it, nowadays, it's a known fact that we love our high heeled shoes. They make us taller, elongate our legs and make our feet pointier however, at what cost and damage is this fashion statement inflicting upon us? Research and statistics show high heel shoes cause long-lasting damage and continue to be one of the biggest contributors of foot pain in women.
Wearing high heels or stilettos throws our musculoskeletal systems natural alignment completely off balance as it forces our foot into an unnatural, plantar flexed (pointed) position, placing our ankle joint under increased load while standing and walking and therefore, inhibiting its ability to absorb shock appropriately.
Heels above 2 inches force your foot forward in your shoe damaging your foot and tendons. Over time, shortening of the achilles tendon, calf muscles (gastrocnemius) and back muscles occur causing poor posture and even bigger problems when wearing flat shoes as our heels will not touch the ground, making walking very painful.
Deformities of the foot, blisters, in-grown toenails, bunions, stress fractures, unsteady gait, shin splints, plantar faciitis (inflammation of the fascia on the bottom of our feet, which stabilises us when we walk/run), sprains, corns, hammer toes, aches, pains, numbness, swelling, knee pain (extra stress on the knee can cause Osteoarthritis), hip pain, back pain, neck pain, circulation restriction are just some of the injuries/conditions occurring from those ‘ever so high’ heels we love so much!
